It’s a work-out, but don’t tell the kids!
In the land of the Mediterranean diet, Italy, you’d expect low levels of overweight and obesity in children, wouldn’t you? You’d be wrong. With among the highest levels of childhood obesity in Europe our friends the Italians are looking at novel ways to combat the problem. A lack of physical activity is partly to blame. But how do you make kids, who let’s face it, just want to have fun, more active? The answer, it seems, is to build an outdoor gym, but keep it a secret.
Reported on the BBC website, lots of little Italians in a town just north of Venice are getting their daily workout, under the supervision of a personal trainer.

Kids as young as one year of age are being encouraged to climb, run, crawl, and race to make them more physically active. Will it work? Is it enough for the kids to run around while mum, or dad, stands idly by, watching with a beatific smile? Or should we be in this thing together? Let me know what you think. And tell me if you think we should have the same facilities here in the UK.
Maybe if we all found exercise more fun it would be a lot easier to do. One thing that does make exercise easier for adults, in a gym, is the use of personal music. So go on, get your headphones on, and head for your local play park. Just don’t tell anyone…….
